On 23 December 1881 in the rural settlement of Kaitoke, just south of Wanganui, the first child of Francis George NEWCOMBE and his wife Catherine HATHERLY, was born, her name, Mildred Annie.

She owned and operated a Type Writing Business (agency) from 17 Victoria Avenue, Wanganui's main street. Her brother Charles was a typewriter machanic conveniently working from the same location.

She was the first woman to be made a member of the Wanganui Chamber of Commerce.

On 14 March 1912 she left from Wellington embarking on a trip to 'The Old Country' on her own. In the Wanganui Museum is a large album (Ref # Album 51) entitled 'Mildred Annie Newcombe ~ reminiscence of her voyage to the Old Country & Abroad 1912' which is a postcard record of her travels.
